Conclusion
By creating the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Nelson protected the area from overdevelopment and destructive industry. If Nelson had not taken a stand, the Apostle Islands would not be an ecologically and visually prosperous area visited by hundreds of thousands annually. If the Ojibwe had not taken a stand for their land rights, it would have been difficult to preserve their community and cultural traditions.
